Obituary

Shirley A. Ter Horst age 91, of Holland, was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on March 29, 2021.

To know her was to love her. With a mischievous smile and twinkle in her eye, Shirley loved fiercely and embodied what it meant to live life to the fullest with Christ by her side. At 91 her mind was just as smart and sharp as it was in her early 20's. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her family as she shared with them how to have a deep love for our Lord and Savior, to keep family close through hardships and losses, and have a zest for life with a never-ending smile and positive attitude.
Born March 11, 1930, Shirley was the only child in her family of four children born in a hospital. She absolutely loved music. As a young child, her sister Bernie played the guitar while they sang and washed dishes. Often, neighbors would stop by their home to sing along. Shirley taught herself to play the piano by ear in the key of C, never needing music, and would sit and play her favorite hymns for hours. In high school and at church she was an avid member of the choir.
As a freshman at Ottawa Hills High School, her sister Florence convinced her to transfer to Grand Rapids Christian with the simple phrase "you will love it!" Determined to make this dream a reality, Shirley got a job to pay her own way through sophomore, junior, and senior year at Grand Rapids Christian high school. It is here she met the love of her life, Don TerHorst; they were married on April 27, 1950.
Making a home on Knapp Street in Grand Rapids, Don & Shirley raised their 5 children and attended Beckwith Christian Reformed Church. Forever the socialite, Shirley brought joy to their numerous friends from Grand Rapids. She devoted over 23 years to Grand Rapids Christian schools as she volunteered at her children's classrooms; during this time she helped Ladies Aid, as well as mother & daughter teas. Shirely also served lunch one day a week and organized numerous fundraisers and bazaars every November.
In 1982, they moved to Holland, and attended Harderwyk Christian Reformed Church. As an active member of the church, she also enjoyed joining the Women's Literary Club and the Water Lily's aerobics class. She and Don also enjoyed summers cruising the Great Lakes with their boating friends. Beyond the Great Lakes, Shirley loved to travel; she and Don were blessed to see many countries and places all over the world. After Don passed away, Shirley married Ralph Wolthuis in May 1996. She and Ralph continued traveling, often taking their new blended families on trips. After Ralph passed, Shirley moved into Freedom Village where she met new friends, enjoyed Wine time, cards, and walks downtown Holland.
Family was everything to Shirley; her family gatherings on holidays were very dear to her heart. She loved playing the piano and singing Christmas carols with her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Shirley would sit back just watching the chaos with a huge smile as they all opened their stockings and presents. Summers by the lake and pool time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was a common tradition every summer. An avid golfer, Shirley played in their annual family golf outing every July into her 90's. She loved going to all her children's sporting events, where she met and made lasting friends with their parents. She continued that practice with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, consistently attending their sporting events with a smile on her face, cheering loudly for those near and dear to her heart.
One of the last nights of Shirley's life, she heard several hymns being played, she even asked the nurse to turn off the music that she wanted to sleep. Throughout the next several days, Shirley reflected on the importance of these songs in her life, "When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul." She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of love and acceptance just as God loved and accepted her despite her imperfections. To her family she was a beloved woman of God that taught all "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8).

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Ter Horst in 1993 and Ralph Wolthuis in 2011; grandsons, J. Daniel Koster, and Brian Ter Horst. Her siblings: Bernice Dornewerd, Florence VanDam, Andrew Brummel Jr., Don Stuursma.

She is survived by her children, Don and Ann Ter Horst of Holland, Randy and Pat Ter Horst of Holland, Lori Koster of Zeeland, Dave and Joyce Ter Horst of Zionsville, IN., Linda and Steve Konyndyk of Zeeland; Grandchildren: Joanne(Tim)VanVliet, Rob(Jenna)TerHorst, Julie(Adam)Potter, Kristin(Jason)Haartman, Scott TerHorst, Becki(Brad)Dykstra, Nate(Kara) Koster, Leah(Nate)Boer, Dawn(Jeremy)Lantz, Jon(Dani)TerHorst, Andrea TerHorst, Josh TerHorst, Chelsea(Kyle)Haverdink, Brett Konyndyk, Abby Konyndyk, 29 great grandchildren; in-laws: Phillis Brummel, Marcia Stuursma, Henry(Marge)Ter Horst, Ardith Roodvoets, Gord(Jane)Zylstra, Jim(Jane)Ter Horst; step-children, Randall(Linda)Wothuis of Caledonia, Jan Hyma of Miami, Sandy(Mitch)Veenstra of Hudsonville.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Freedom Village, the Inn, and Hospice of Holland for the loving care she received.

Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th St. Holland. There will be a graveside service for immediate family in Rosedale Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Grand Rapids, Zeeland, and Holland Christian Schools, or Hospice of Holland.
