Obituary

Sally Lou Shimp, age 81, of Holland, Michigan, moved to her heavenly home on Thursday, July 30, 2020, following a long illness.

Sally was born and raised in Holland, Michigan, the fourth of six children, to Neal and Dorothy Houtman. She attended Holland High School; and Eastern Michigan University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy (OT) and a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling.
Sally worked at the University of Michigan Medical Center for many years and in St. Joseph, Michigan, as a Psych OT. Sally led group activities for people with eating disorders, schizophrenia, depression, and more.

Growing up, Sally attended First United Methodist Church in Holland with her family. After returning to Holland later in her career, she worked as part of the administrative staff and attended Trinity Reformed Church. In retirement, Sally rejoined the First United Methodist Church and she focused her energies giving back to the Holland community. Sally enjoyed volunteering for many organizations that she believed in, including church, the public library, high school reunions, condo association, Tulip Time, Evergreen Commons, among others. Sally consistently participated in Bible studies, including Bible Study Fellowship.

Sally was an understanding and giving person. She loved to give thoughtful gifts. She was creative, musical, and artistic, expressing her talent playing the guitar, singing with the Evergreen Chorale, taking watercolor painting classes, and listening to all types of music.

Sally had an independent spirit and courageously pursued a full life. She had many other interests, including reading, book club, bridge, knitting, and word puzzles, especially Cryptoquote, crossword puzzles, and Scrabble. Sally and her sister, Billie, would do the daily puzzles in the Holland Sentinel newspaper, helping each other as needed, and playing a game or two of Scrabble every week.

An integral part of Sally's life was her role as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She wished all her grandkids lived closer so she could develop relationships with each one and appreciate each grandchild's uniqueness.

Sally is survived by her children: Kevin and Susan Shimp, of Pottsboro, TX; Cynthia and George Farner, of Minneapolis, MN; Scott and Rose Shimp, of Nunica, MI; and Erik and Lisa Shimp, of West Olive, MI.

Grandchildren (and great-grandchildren): Matthew and Stephanie Richardson (Luke and Lydia), of Calera, OK; Steven and Talia Shimp (Hezekiah, Ashkenaz, Elijah, and Keziah), of Russellville, AL; Daniel and Tiffany Noe (Eugene), of Palmer, AK; Timothy Shimp, of Edmond, OK; Kaden Farner, of Minneapolis, MN; Zaryn Farner, of Minneapolis, MN; Melissa Orsini (Austin, Kayla, Jamey, Sarah, and Jeremiah), of Port Huron, MI; Jason Collard, of Howard City, MI; Robert Collard (Nathan, Dillon, Corey, and Ryan) of Grand Rapids, MI; Stacy Shimp, of Grand Rapids, MI; and Evan Shimp, of Grand Rapids, MI.
Siblings: Mary VanTamelen, of Palo Alto, CA; and Ken and Diane Houtman, of Saugatuck, MI.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Joan Zuidema and Billie Clark; and brother, Don Houtman.

The family would like to express special thanks for the wonderful staff at Resthaven Boersma Cottage for their care.
