Obituary for Clark Weersing

July 8, 1933 - August 2, 2018
Holland, Michigan | Age 85

Clark D. Weersing, D.C., passed away August 2, 2018, at 85 years of age. Surviving are his nephew Nathan Weersing from Saffron-Walden, U.K., niece Penny (Weersing) Machinski from Portland, Oregon, sister-in-law Jane Paulton and niece Carol Paulton of Palm Coast, Florida

Clark was born May 2, 1933, to Ira and Estelle Weersing of Lake City. He was educated through high school there and went on to Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. His four years of professional training were at Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, where he met his wife-to-be Shirley Hungate. They married in 1958 and after Clark's graduation in 1959 moved to Holland where he set up his practice. He served on the board of the Michigan Chiropractic Society and on the West Michigan Health Systems Agency. He retired in 1995.

While in Lake City he became the first Eagle Scout of the troop and this experience led him to become Scoutmaster of Troop 151 at Christ Memorial Church from 1959 to 1965. Then after joining First Presbyterian Church he served as Scoutmaster of Troop 147 from 1966 to 1978. He received the Chippewa District's Distinguished Service Award in 1972 and the National Eagle Scout Associations Scoutmaster Award in 1981. He was a sustaining member of the West Michigan Shores Council through 1990.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in the 60's and later the noon time Rotary Club. He served as a PALs big brother to two boys. His noontime breaks took him to workouts at the Holland City pool and track, and the Hope College Dow Center, where he made lifelong friends.

His civic involvement included the Holland Chamber of Commerce, a volunteer for the United Way, and the Herrick Library Board after being elected Sixth Ward Holland City Councilman from 1986 to 1990. He volunteered at Evergreen Commons for 15 years in the day care center.

Clark's lifelong hobby from the age of 13 was sailing. He joined Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in 1964 and served as commodore in 1979 and 1984. He taught in the club's sailing school and established the Flying Junior and Optimist Pram fleets for young sailors, donating a trophy for the latter.

Clark was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Weersing, on July 8, 2015. A memorial service is not planned. Clark's ashes will lay next to Shirley's at the Memorial Garden at First Presbyterian Church on 659 State Street.
