Obituary

Alan Glendening, age 80, passed away surrounded by his loving family on August 28, 2018 in Kalamazoo, MI, following a brief battle with cancer.

He will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him as a man of great faith who loved the Lord, a loyal friend to all who knew him, and a courageous leader who possessed wisdom and integrity, a wonderful sense of humor and a tender heart.

He lived life to the fullest with his wife of sixty years, Barbara Born Glendening. They were sweetheart friends since the fifth grade. They both graduated from State High School.

Alan was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle who thrived on providing support and encouragement, as together he and Barb crisscrossed the state and country attending sporting events, dance recitals, plays, and choir concerts.

His favorite place in the entire world was the front porch of the family cottage at Ottawa Beach, where he cherished spending time surrounded by his family and watching boats; especially the majestic Great Lakes freighters.

Alan founded Kapco, a pharmaceutical company, with his brothers John (Marilyn) Glendening and Larry (Betty) Glendening. He spent the remainder and bulk of his career at The Upjohn Company, where he was employed for 28 years. He was given the William E. Upjohn Award in 1974 and retired as director of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing.

He is survived by children Tom Glendening (Leslie Parker Glendening) of Grand Rapids, MI, Sally Glendening Jansen (Michael Jansen) of Grand Rapids, MI, Anna Glendening Beird (Jeff Beird) of Holland, MI, and grandchildren Luke Glendening (Paige Snyder, fiancé), Joe Glendening (Katie Malewitz), Mackenzie Glendening Wilson (Michael Wilson), Josey Beird, Eliza Beird, Owen Beird, Samuel Jansen, Jonah Jansen, great grandchild Henry Wilson, two great grandchildren on the way whom he was eagerly awaiting, sister-in-law, Marty Born and many treasured nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 East 16th Street, Holland, MI 49423.
