Alice was born on May 22, 1930, in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, to Jan and Tryntje De Graaf. In 1947 she immigrated to the US with her family. A few years later she met Nicolaas Ellerbroek, also an immigrant, who was immediately welcomed by her parents because he could speak Dutch. After four months Nicholaas left to serve in Korea, but the two remained in contact, and were married soon after he returned home.

Alice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She adored her children and always strived to teach them by her example.
Throughout her life, Alice was strong and brave, tolerant and forgiving. She had a positive attitude and was known for her infectious smile that she passed on to her children.

Alice is survived by her husband of nearly 68 years, Nicolaas Ellerbroek; children: Martin (Linda) Ellerbroek, John (Ellen) Ellerbroek, Nancy (Beth Post) Ellerbroek, Diane (Frank) Barefield; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: John (Phyllis) De Graaf, Fran Kortman, Helene (Rich) Overway; in-laws: Jopie Brown, Emmy (Kees) Mulder, Karl (Adele) Ellerbroek; as well as many extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be 11:30 am on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Niekerk Christian Reformed Church, 545 Country Club Rd, Holland, MI 49423. There will be a time of visitation prior to the service from 10:00-11:15 am on Tuesday. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Our Daily Bread Ministries or Right to Life. Arrangements are by Langeland Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 East 16th St. Holland, MI 49423.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Nick, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. The sorrow of the faithful is not that of permanent loss, but the tender sense of sadness that comes in saying good-bye for now to someone we love. May today's sorrow give way to the peace and comfort of God's love. Some years ago I read an anonymous quote that still encourages me today: Since God is with us, and our loved ones are with Him then they are not very far away. I pray God will provide comfort for the family, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to hold in their hearts forever.
