Condolence & Memory Journal

My sympathy and prayers for comfort to all of Jose's family. He was able to welcome everyone into his world of light and love with the most ready smile, infectious laugh, and a joke or two. Joe's sister, Nilda, my co-worker at Holland Public Schools, introduced me to her loving family back in 1979, and I carry that warm love with me to this day. May the Lord be near to each one of you, always.

I did not Joe personally but I knew his son's. They respected and loved their father and they are fine men themselves. Knowing this is a testimony that he himself was a good man and wonderful father and grandfather. I wish peace to all his family and know he passed this world a rich man in the love of his family in his heart.

He always was so excepting of us when we were younger at his home. He was our papa Joe. He had such a great laugh! I will miss him .

What can I say about a man who meant everything to so many of us to make our hearts not be broken? I can't unbreak our hearts but what I do is share a memory.

I first met Joe 30 years ago but it seems like I have always known him. From day one, he welcomed David and myself. We were never just Joe's girlfriend and son; We were family. I was his hija (daughter) and David was his grandson.

That's how Dad was. He loved genuinely. He was always ready to listen and I mean really listen to hear not to respond. I remember once when the boys were little, he stopped by and Joe and I were telling him the rough morning we had because the toaster stopped working and the boys were having one of those crazy toddler meltdowns because they had to have cereal instead of their usual toast that morning it hopes of getting some fatherly direction/advice. He listened, laughed and shared his own fatherly stories. He left only to return with a new toaster. That was dad - he was a fixer - that was his love language.

I sit here now knowing how incredibly different all our lives will be because Dad is not on Earth any longer to give his guidance, share stories with or catch the latest movie with. I do take solace in the fact that his approach to life as molded us into being better listeners, doers/fixers as well as how to have genuine love for the people in our lives.

Dad was a doer, a fixer, a friend, a father, a grand father and a great grand father. I will miss him dearly. We all will miss him dearly. The people we are today because of this great man, is why he will always live on. Thank you, Dad for not only the toaster but for showing me love, all your advice, the hand holding when I needed to cry and that fabulous boisterous laugh that let me know real joy was possible. Love you now and forever.
