Tribute & Message From The Family

Nancy Bergman Lacy, age 87, of Holland, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Inn at Freedom Village in Holland.

Nancy was born in Irvine, Kentucky (near Lexington) and graduated from Georgetown College and Southern Seminary in Kentucky. She became the assistant to the Chaplain of Baptist Hospital in Louisville, where she and Albert E. "AE", were married in 1955. She received a MSW Degree in Social Work from Carver Kent School of Social Work in Louisville. Nancy did further study Purdue University.

Nancy was a school social worker in North Vernon, Indiana and an administrator of school social workers in Bloomington, Indiana, and a home support specialist in Kalamazoo Public Schools. She spent 30 years in various school systems.

Nancy received the Medallion of Excellence Award and her picture hangs in the Hall of Excellence of King Westwood School in Kalamazoo.

The Lacy's moved to Freedom Village Retirement Community in Holland, Michigan in 2009. After retirement, the Lacy's spent 6 months in Venice Florida where Nancy was the president of the Venice Symphony.

Nancy was fascinated with people. She wanted to know them, laugh and sometimes cry with them. She often said that being a minister's wife, a mother, grandmother and a school social worker has been a fulfilling, interesting and wonderful life.
Nancy was loved by her children and grandchildren and adored by her husband. As "AE" said, she was the "BEST of wives, BEST of mothers and my BEST friend."

Nancy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Albert E. "AE" Lacy; daughter, Laura (Bill) Benson of Grand Rapids; son, Stephen (Virginia) Lacy of Evanston, IL; grandchildren, Daniel Vriesman of Holland, Ashley Vriesman formerly of Holland, Will Lacy and Sarah Lacy both of Evanston, IL; brother, Weston (Rose) Bergman of Vidalia, GA; and several other relatives in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia.

Funeral services are planned for 11:00am Saturday, March 17 at Third Reformed Church, 111 W 13th St., Holland, with Rev. Kama Jongerius officiating. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, KY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Nancy's passing. I first got to know Nancy when I worked as a cook at Freedom Village. She was always smiling and took time to talk with me. Nancy was a beautiful person, inside and out, with a heart of gold. I only knew her for a couple of years, but, I am truly blessed to have her as my friend.

Dear A.E., Steve, and Laura,

So sorry to hear this news of Nancy's passing. This is a huge loss to your families and ours. I like to think that my father, "Jimmy" as Nancy called him, and many others from our family that have passed before are welcoming her into Heaven. She was a lovely lady to our entire family. Was glad that I got to speak with her by phone a few weeks ago. May God bless you as you deal with this huge loss. Hope to see all of you and your families soon.

Much Love,

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of Nancy, a wonderful friend and neighbor. Not to mention being a super lady. AE, Laura and Steve--our thoughts are very much with you all. It has been many days since our lives connected on Saybrook Drive in Kalamazoo, but we strongly feel very enhanced by the opportunity to know such a special lady.

Nancy was a wonderful and fun person to be around! She was so talented in so many different ways but always had time to be a friend. Tom and I enjoyed the time of Nancy and A.E.'s service to our church and considered them truly our friends as well our pasters. Yes, Nancy did seem like a Co-Paster but never seem to look at herself in that way. She also served the students in the school she worked at for KPS in a very personal way, as was her style. Prayers for you, A.E., Laura and family and Steven and family.

I first knew Nancy when I worked at Spring Valley School in Kalamazoo. I met up with her again when my parents moved to the seventh floor at Freedom Village. She was the same friendly, warm and kind woman I knew from many years ago. My thoughts are with her family with the loss of a beautiful person.
