Ruth Mayou, 86, of Holland, went home to heaven May 9, 2017.

Ruth was born in New York on July 15, 1930, to Harry Sr., and Dorothy (Hoffman) Close. She graduated from high school and was attending college when she met Mark E. Mayou. Ruth and Mark married in 1951 and started their life of service in ministry together. Mark served as a Baptist minister and Ruth assisted in children and youth ministry. Ruth was also a talented self-taught musician. She often played xylophone, accordion, bells, piano, and organ. But Ruth is probably most remembered for her smile. They served at First Baptist Church in Soap Lake, WA, Bethel Baptist in South Haven, First Baptist of Holland, MI, prior to Mark's retirement when they became members of Ventura Baptist Church of Holland. Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Mark Roy Mayou I, in 1978.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Rev. Mark E. Mayou, grandson Mark Roy II (Michelle) Mayou, great-grandchildren: Marquise, Anthony, Catlyn, Valarie; great-great-grandson Carter, siblings: John (Beverly) Close, Henry Jr. (MaryAnn) Close, Mary Hitchner, Harriet Nemitz; sister-in-law Margaret Dewandel; and many extended family.

A funeral to honor the faith and life of Ruth Mayou will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, May 13, Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland, MI 49423. Pastor Timothy Durey will officiate. Visitation 4-7 pm, Friday at the funeral home. Interment in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions to Hospice of Holland.
